Just breathe

"The inspiration for 'Just Breathe' first came a little over a year ago when I heard my 5-year-old talking to his friends about how emotions affect different areas of the brain, and how to calm down by taking a few deep breaths - things that were learning in the kindergarten of his school, "Citizens of the World", in Mar Vista, California. I was amazed and happy to witness how meaningful social-emotional learning was being in elementary school to these very young minds.

The following year, I decided to take a 6-week online course through Mindful Schools (http://www.mindfulschools.org/), thinking that if my son was learning about this, it made sense for me to learn as well. From the first week I noticed the positive effects of this practice not only reflected in my own being but also in my relationships with others.
As a filmmaker, I am always interested in finding a subject worth filming and I felt that Mindfulness was a concept that needed to be communicated visually. Luckily, my partner, who is also my partner making movies, agreed. We did "Just Breathe" with our son, his classmates, and his family on a Saturday afternoon. The video is unscripted - what the children say is exclusively based on their neuro-scientific understanding of difficult emotions, and how they can cope with them through breathing and meditation.
