With this case, the deception about polluting emissions of the automobile industry has already spread from the US to Europe and to the Asian market. And it includes both diesel and gasoline engines. Higher pressure wheels make cars consume less fuel and therefore emit less during the tests that give them their environmental rating. This is one of the tricks that manufacturers apply to their test models (the golden cars). The battery includes a wide variety of specific settings that later cannot be reproduced in real driving.
With these Japanese engines, the entire spectrum of automobile segments that manipulated the pollution data is covered: the Volkwagen case with its 11 million diesel engines rigged to cheat the pollution limits was opened. That scandal, which broke out in September 2015, also affected higher-end cars like Audis. Two months later, in November, the German company also acknowledged "inconsistencies" in its carbon dioxide data.
In diesel cars, the toxin whose measurements were being rigged was, above all, nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In fact, different models of diesel cars have reflected a large difference between test and real emissions on the road thanks only to the use of golden cars. The measurements carried out by analysts such as the German Adac or the British Emmisions Analyticsdetected these differences in Renault, Fiat, Citroën, Mercedes, Honda and even Nissan and Mitsubishi (whose hybrid model released six times more NO2 on the road than in the laboratory) . The head of Emmisions Analytics, Nick Molden, after the results, explained that it is "a systemic issue."
Now these small cars from Nissan (600 cubic centimeters) extend the hoaxes to gasoline engines in vehicles of modest range. With gasoline, the levels that have been rigged are those of carbon dioxide, CO2. Each type of fuel has its star gas when it comes to polluting the air. Regardless of fuel or cylinder capacity, manufacturers cheated on the mandatory environmental performance.
In this sense, Julia Poliscanova, the head of Clean Vehicles of the international organization Transport and Environment, tells eldiario.es, after learning about the Mitsubishi affair, that "the iceberg of the tricking of car pollutants continues to emerge: now also in Japan ". And he emphasizes that "we are talking about all kinds of cars, both diesel and gasoline, small-displacement cars as well as large SUVs." For this organization, the problem is that the emissions tests "are supervised by the manufacturers themselves, not by independent entities."
After admitting the deception, detected by Nissan, Mitsubishi assures that it paralyzes the production of these units. The company quintupled its profits in 2014. In Europe, this brand is not predominant in the general market although last year it grew by 27% on the continent. Both Japanese manufacturers have stated that they are thinking about how to compensate for this fraud.
However, just two months ago, the European automobile association (Acea), which is chaired precisely by a man from Nissan (consortium with Renault), complained in an internal document that the manufacturers had gone beyond what was reasonable in the containment of emissions: "We have been contributing beyond the fair proportion on the road to reducing CO2 emissions through large investments in research and development," claimed the employers in a report that included their proposals to contain the production of gases .
The employers understood that they had already played a "substantial role" in the effort to tackle the problems of the greenhouse effect and asked the European governments to spend some 300,000 million euros in resurfacing the continental road network so that the finest filming of their products will save on fuel.
