Non-toxic pregnancy at home

During its first months of life in the womb, the fetus is particularly sensitive to its environment. The placenta protects you from many diseases and infections, but it is not designed to act as a filter for the many toxins and chemicals present in our environment today.

In this article, we proposesome simple guidelines to protect yourself from harmful substances with which you may come into contact during pregnancy and thus offer your baby a safer and healthier environment.

In the maintenance and cleaning of the house, it is better to avoid:

  • Air fresheners, scented candles and incenses, especially those of artificial origin.
  • Paints, solvents and varnishes.
  • Cleaning products that are not natural or at least with an eco-label.
  • New furniture, as they usually have chemicals such as flame retardants, glues or fungicides. If you buy a new furniture for the baby, leave it in a well-ventilated space for a few weeks.
  • Household pesticides and aerosols.

And it is recommendedventilate the house well several times a day.

In personal care and beauty rituals:

  • Avoid hair dyes.
  • Choose natural and ecological cosmetics, and use only what is strictly necessary.
  • Use ecological toothpaste and avoid rinses or mouthwashes.
  • Use natural bar soap, without perfumes or preservatives.
  • Choose a natural and ecological shampoo in pill form.

At lunchtime:

  • Do not use plastics when cooking, transporting or re-heating your food.
  • Try to eat organic farming products.
  • Avoid industrially prepared foods. Bet on homemade food.
  • Avoid food packaged in plastic and cans -because all cans are laminated inside-. The best option is to buy in bulk or packed in glass.
  • Reduce fish that contain a lot of mercury (fresh tuna or swordfish).

In choosing and caring for clothes:

  • Wash newly bought clothes to eliminate any toxic substances that have been acquired during the production process: from cultivation with pesticides, bleaches, antifungals, biocides, to treatments for dyeing or printing, or to provide fabrics with benefits such as anti-wrinkle, stain repellants, flame retardants, or make them softer.
  • Choose clothes made of natural and ecological fabrics.
  • The ideal for baby clothes is to use natural second-hand clothes. Cheaper, less toxic and more environmentally friendly.

We hope these tips help you live a more natural and healthy pregnancy.
