Good Agricultural Practices (GAP): Or how to make up a genocide with pesticides

Good Agricultural Practices (GAP): Or how to make up a genocide with pesticides

In the last 20 years, the amount of pesticides dumped in the most populated part of Argentina has increased by more than 1000%, now easily passing 500 million liters per year.

Weed resistance increases, floods become cyclical, and climate change makes itself felt. Deforestation and loss of biodiversity are incessant. All inherent and consequence of this dependent chemical agricultural model, invented by corporations and endorsed by all the governments of the day.

The 39 health camps implemented by the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UNR as a final practice for students to become doctors, permanently inform us of the growth of diseases in towns of 4 provinces, which double or triple the national average rates, and that only have in common the agro-industrial model and pesticide spraying.

The studies of engineers like Marcos Tomasoni, are clear with respect to fumigations: there are various types of drifts and they are uncontrollable. Not for nothing did Conicet find atrazine and endozulfan in the air of Antarctica.

The transgenic model, almost a monoculture, destroyed the productive diversity and the native forest, expelling several million inhabitants due to hunger and necessity, to the suburbs of the cities to survive in the concrete jungle. Currently, with the available technology, with a worker 500 hectares are attended to labor and according to studies by the INTA of Marcos Juárez, the native forest absorbs 300ml of rainwater per hour and a transgenic soybean crop, fumigated and waterproofed by these substances, only 30 ml per hour.

Of the chemicals used in these industrial agricultural practices, glyphosate (+ 300 million liters per year approx.) Is the maximum star, but science and the WHO, through the IARC tell us clearly about their toxicity: they are products categorized as probable carcinogens. In addition, these poisons are teratogenic (affect the embryo in its development and can cause congenital malformations) and endocrine disruptors (affect the hormonal system and produce irreversible damage).

This brief summary cannot express or make visible the despair of the sick or the pain for the deceased. But it tries to be clear, without ambiguity. Good agricultural practices are an attempt to something similar to humanize war through international pacts, which no one complies with. In war, weapons kill, in this model toxins poison and eventually kill. War must not be humanized: there must be no war. There must not be a model that poisons, there must be one that respects life.

There is no way around the effects of this model. Only change it for another that is friendly with nature and with life. Good Agricultural or Agricultural Practices are not a response to all the aggressions of this model. They are only a strategy of the agro-industrial corporations with the complicity of the governments, to achieve social consensus, confuse the population and continue to earn money for a concentrated sector of the agro-industrial, financial and speculative capital, to the detriment of the health and well-being of a village.

Let's not make up this silent genocide of people and natural species - let's transform this model into an agroecological one!

In Santa Fe and in SELF DEFENSE, we want laws that protect us, on the way to the change of model!

That our projects be treated and approved:

* MODIFICATION OF LAW No. 11273 (wrongly called phytosanitary)
